"Newgrounds death" bots promoting shady Discord links

Posted by Kiraichu - 3 days ago

I don’t know how much of an issue this is for other people but it’s happened a few times to me so I figured I would make a news post about it.

On August 26, I got a weird comment on my news post about my “okinawa” project having this as the body:

Now as with every weird comment I get (especially from the infamous Jued guy going after people who play Geometry Dash on this site including me), I went and blocked this person straight away and also messaged Tom about this bot. The first sketchy thing about this is the name. I’m not familiar with weird bots on this site so I’m going into this blind but this name just screams “bot” to me. I do know that there’s been a time or two where people with strictly numbers as their username is not a bot (for example, the user lexycat had their old username as 1450 according to Geometry Dash like in this picture here. Please ignore my bad iPad handwriting…), but in my eyes it seems very rare.

Second thing which makes a lot of sense is the lack of a profile picture because every single one of these that I’ve gotten had no profile picture (Jued never has a profile picture either). The next thing is the message itself. You got a shady Discord link and then a message that kind of threatens the user to join or else Newgrounds will get hacked or something and shut down forever.

DO NOT CLICK THESE!!

Admittedly, I have not clicked on these myself. But since these comments are already sketchy by themselves, I would not trust any Discord server links from these users.

@AWildDomino had gotten a bot message a few days ago as well and shared this screenshot with me:

And more screenshots from me with two other bots (one of which is ironically named “newgroundsdeath”):

One more thing I’ve seen all these have in common is that they all have a weird set of words at the end. My guess is this is to bypass in order to send the comment in the first place. I’ve seen similar things with Geometry Dash bots and trolls putting a jumble of random capital and lowercase letters as well as numbers at the end of their comments in order to bypass the filter the game has set on it.

If you have any experiences with any “Newgrounds death” bots, you can do what I did. Take a screenshot of the bot in question along with the comment, put them on your block list, and then message @TomFulp about banning the account. From my experience, I’ve had three bots comment on my profile posts in a matter of days and I felt so bad messaging Tom about them lol… Just so you know, all of these bot accounts have been banned and their profiles will not show up.

Yeah, this is what I wanted to share with you all. Stay safe with these bots and have a good day/night! ^^

I also got links to shady discord site but I'm glad I didn't click it.

The thing is all of these Discord links are have different invite URLs. I didn’t click them but either they refreshed the invite or there’s multiple servers.

these bots have been posting the same kinda stuff under my posts as well, i delete them as soon as possible (because reporting them wouldn't solve the problem).

I do report these to Tom via message and it seems to be resolved in minutes to a few hours depending on when he’s online.

So from what little i see ill go out on a limb and say they are targeting you guys who have a lot of fans, since ive not seen anyone else but you comment about it.
And i havent gotten zilch from them. Get eyes on this anyways before it blooms into a problem
my guess is that its sorta a phishing or bait link so you join with your main Disc account where they can then put a target on and go after for whatever reason.

I’m interested as to what their method really is, without compromising safety of course.

The targeting part makes sense as I (241), AWildDomino (405), SkilledFanBoy (713), and wineplume who commented earlier (195) have all gotten them and each one of us have triple digit follower counts. Whoever makes these bot accounts should know we’re not stupid to fall for these. These comments and usernames make it too obvious for it to work.

These comments are so annoying that I've decided to set all my blogs as approved comments only so if they try to message me again, only the spammer and I can see it and ofc the very moment I see it, I'll block, report to Tom and delete the message (I got four comments from them in two blogs of mine). I had to do in order to protect my fans, friends, people I know and random readers that might stumble across my blogs.

There is also this forum thread about it: https://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1549143

That’s actually a good idea. It reminds me of YouTube and how they have a setting to leave comments up for review before allowing them to go through to show on your video/post. I should do that in the future.

The interesting thing is that this user had the same comment happen to them on the same day and mentioned a user with three random numbers which could possibly mean it’s the same bot.

@Kiraichu The nice thing is that you can set this for old blogs too except those posted on the frontpage of the website because they require real-time comments, so those would be the only blogs at risk of being raided by these comments. I rarely do it, and I've already set all my blogs as approved comments only. I also warned other people I could interact with who already had nasty experiences with the infamous "I have accidentally reported you" Discord/Bluesky scam.

@Kiraichu Could be Occams razor and they are just waiting for you to slip up and click it. Could be a bot network that is also just spam sending them to anyone that has a certain threshold of... enthusiasts. Too early to tell now, keep peepers peeled if anything changes.

The last time I got a comment like this was on Saturday but it seems to have stopped for now. What’s interesting is that these bots have commented two days apart from each other. I don’t know if this is another method they’re using or not. Speculation on my end.

@Kiraichu I've noticed that not necessarily all people with high number of fans got targeted, even people with two digits fans got targeted such as this person who also follows me: https://mrermar.newgrounds.com/news/post/1562226

another person with only 6 fans: https://professorstarstar.newgrounds.com/news/post/1562208

and the OP of the thread I posted: https://karwecka.newgrounds.com/

So I don't think it has something to do with fans numbers, they are just targeting whoever they can catch.

Ok that’s interesting. I didn’t notice that. I just figured by the comment earlier they’d be targeting those with higher fan counts but I guess you also wouldn’t know how many fans they have until you actually click on their profile. Anyone who gets featured on the frontpage especially could be easy targets for these bots if they continue.

Join nothing for total Newgrounds stagnation
Newgrounds is fine lol it's a great site
Sometimes I put the fish floor paper banana. Does anyone else do this

I got a comment like that before, I didn't think much of it, so I just deleted it and blocked the account, I genuinely didn't know it was this bad of a problem

Yeah I didn’t think much of it either until it happened again.

Are they the same? People behind the one who sends you death threats

Death threats? I’ve never gotten any so I don’t know.

DUDE! You too? I keep having bots like this in my posts and it's super annoying. They remind me of the Discord bots that used to go in GD comment sections. Luckily GD doesn't deal with it as bad anymore. Let's hope we can get them to stop.

I hope it stops too.

I also ran into this problem back on August 29, and at first I didn’t know about it. I joined a Discord server and wasn’t paying attention, but later I wrote about it, and thanks to @ShangXian for warning me. The takeaway is that spam bots with suspicious links in a Discord server are also a form of fraud.

Yeah, I’m hoping this problem is short-lived. As long as people know not to click on them, they’ll realize it’s not working.

One of them commented on a few of my news posts but I immidietly reported them and then deleted their message so no one clicked the link

I got this once, but eh, i deleted it, it's ruining the comments

I've gotten two of these also; I knew they were shady and I just deleted the comments

It's good to know that this is a thing that's been going around for other people too
